"Traces of Mining in Bredelar" — In the Footsteps of the Miners.
Bredelar Station
Bredelar Station
The hike in the footsteps of the Bredelar miners is a trail for explorers. At 15 stations, visitors gain a real sense of mining history, bringing an important chapter of Bredelar’s past to life.
Find the spots where ore was mined. Discover the remains of former mines. Learn about the miners’ hard work and their mining methods. Immerse yourself in the underground world of the mine shafts. Hike along the ore transport routes. Learn to recognize the traces of mining activities in seemingly insignificant irregularities on the surface or in the vegetation.
But also enjoy the impressive diversity of the landscape. The trail leads across plateaus with distant views of the Sauerland, through sparse beech forests, and through the idyllic Diemeltal.
The trail first follows Sauerlandstraße toward Beringhausen and turns onto Diemelseestraße after about 0.5 km. After crossing the Hoppecketal Bridge, turn left after about 100 meters onto a side path leading to the Lydiastollen. From there, the trail continues uphill, passing the Beringhof/Alte Poststraße fork toward Beringhof. After about 100 m, the trail turns right and leads through the Bellerstein to the open-pit section of the Charlottenzug mine, the highest point of the hiking trail. Hikers are rewarded for this climb with magnificent views and panoramic vistas of the Hoppecke and Diemeltal valleys. On the farm road toward Bredelar, you’ll reach the intersection of the farm road and Beringhof, where the path descends through the Hackstöppel into the Diemeltal. Along the Diemel River, the trail follows the same route as the northern section of the Giershagen Hiking Trail. The two trails diverge at the junction with the L870 near Wepa. After a few meters on the L870 toward Bredelar, the trail turns left onto the old Poststraße. On the way back to Bredelar, information signs provide details about historical events. At the Poststraße/Beringhof fork, it’s worth taking a detour to the Lourdes-Grotte, which offers a beautiful view of Bredelar. From there, the trail heads downhill again across the Hoppecke Bridge to the monastery, the trail’s final destination.
