Quagga mussel

The Sauerland-Seen are special natural and recreational areas and offer a wide range of opportunities for water sports, fishing and relaxing hours by the water. To ensure that the waters retain their high ecological quality in the future, responsible management is crucial.

An increasing challenge is posed by the quagga mussel, an invasive species that has now also been detected in some of the Sauerland-Seen and can affect the ecological balance of the waters.

On this page, you can find out more about the quagga mussel, which regulations apply to recreational users and how you can take simple measures to help protect the Sauerland-Seen and their unique nature.

You can find more detailed information directly from the Ruhrverband.

Why is it a problem for our Sauerland-Seen?
As the quagga mussel is an invasive species, it can multiply rapidly, displace native species and also affect technical facilities such as water pipes or jetties.

How does the quagga mussel get into new waters?
It is often introduced unnoticed via boats, water sports equipment or fishing tackle if these are not thoroughly cleaned after use (microscopic eggs/larvae).

Are there any restrictions on the use of lakes and water sports?
The Sauerland-Seen can still be used for leisure and water sports. It is only important that all visitors observe the protective measures and adhere to the regulations. Special regulations apply to the Hennesee, so that you may only use boats with fixed moorings and other water sports equipment (SUPs, kayaks, schaluch boats, etc.) from stationary rentals.
