Our tour begins right on the Ruhr River at the start of Meschede’s pedestrian zone (Ruhr Bridge). From here, we’ll walk through downtown to the county administration building. Behind the district administration building, Hennepark begins along the Henne floodplains. Here, visitors can experience nature and water firsthand. Among other things, there’s a viewing platform, water features, playground equipment, and much more. Further along the renaturalized Henne River, you’ll find several pieces of outdoor fitness equipment that you’re welcome to try out.
Another highlight on Henne Boulevard is the new “Himmelstreppe” (Stairway to Heaven). Once you’ve climbed the 333 steps, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views. To the west, Hennesee glistens. On the other side, you’ll have a view of the entire city of Meschede.
The path continues past the Chill’in kiosk and across the parking lot of the Hennedamm Hotel. The next stop is the Klausen Chapel in Langeloh, at the end of a birch-lined avenue. The Michaelskapelle on Klausenberg dates back to the 12th century and houses a precious carved altar from the Galiläa Monastery.
The route continues down the Way of the Cross toward downtown Meschede.
You might be lucky enough to visit on market day. Every Tuesday and Friday morning, Kaiser-Otto-Platz is bustling with activity. Here you’ll find stalls selling regional fruits and vegetables as well as fresh flowers. As you walk through the pedestrian zone (Ruhrstraße), shops and cafés also invite you to take a leisurely stroll. The open staircase on the Ruhr Promenade at the end of the pedestrian zone offers a place to linger.
Comfortable shoes.
Need a break?
- When the weather is nice, the “chill’in” kiosk on Hennedamm is open. Here you can get waffles, ice cream, specialty coffees, and cold drinks.
- Not far away is the Biergarten at the Welcome Hotel Meschede/Hennesee.
- From Hennedamm, continue about 1 km along the lake to Berghauser Bucht, where you’ll find the modern H1 am See.
Want to walk around Lake Hennesee? The A8 hiking trail takes you all the way around the lake—a 15-km loop.
