Places to stop for a bite to eat at Lake Hennesee:
Always follow the "A8" hiking trail sign.
There is a hiking map at the parking lot by the Hennedamm Hotel to help you find your way. From here, take the pedestrian underpass to Hennedamm. You’ll pass right by the hiking map showing the trails around Lake Hennesee. Once you reach Hennedamm, turn left and cross the dam. Then turn right and continue along the shore. The trail along the eastern shore of Lake Hennesee follows the paved and relatively flat lakeside path. This path is car-free and a popular walking route—always offering a view of Lake Hennesee. On the western shore, the trail then heads uphill and through a forest. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view of Lake Hennesee before heading back down to the lakeshore. The trail is marked throughout with “A8” signs.
If you don’t want to walk the entire route, you can also cover part of it on the new EMS Hennesee event boat. You can board the ship at any of the four docks and enjoy a relaxing ride for part of the route. On weekdays, the ticket serves as a day pass, allowing you to use the ship multiple times. Or how about a round-trip cruise on Lake Hennesee to round off your hike?
The trail leads up to the dam and takes us around Lake Hennesee from there. Always follow trail marker A8.On the east shore, you’ll walk along a car-free, paved lakeside path. The trail on the west shore takes you over a hill and through the forest, offering a magnificent view of the Hennetalsperre. At the Henndamm parking lot, there is a hiking map where you can check the route.
We recommend wearing sturdy shoes and bringing plenty of food and drinks.
If you’re looking to cool off a bit after your hike, don’t miss the Berghausen Badebucht when the weather is nice. Kids will love the “Piratenbucht Hennesee” adventure playground. Right next to it, you’ll also find the modern H1 lakeside restaurant, which offers a view of Lake Hennesee.
During the summer months, when the weather is nice, the Chill’in kiosk is open right on the dam near the Himmelstreppe (Stairway to Heaven).
If you don’t want to walk the entire route and are looking for a shortcut: There are four landing stages on the lake for the EMS Hennesee event boat: the main landing stage at Hennedamm, Xavers Ranch, Mielinghausen, and Berghauser Bucht. This way, you can cover part of the route in a relaxed manner by boat.
