The five large bodies of water in the Sauerland - Lake Bigge, Lake Listersee, Lake Hennesee, Lake Möhnesee, Lake Sorpesee and Lake Diemelsee - are not of natural origin, but man-made dams that are mainly operated to supply drinking water to the people in the Ruhrgebiet. They feed the Ruhr when the water level is too low and also serve to protect against flooding and to generate energy from hydropower. With the exception of Diemelsee, which is managed by the Hann.Münden Water and Shipping Authority, the Ruhrverband is the operator and owner of the lakes. The Ruhrverband also takes care of the water quality, which is tested again and again in all five dams and is excellent.
But of course the lakes are also leisure paradises and recreational areas for the people of the Sauerland and their guests: because here great leisure activities in front of magnificent natural scenery make the vacation an incomparable experience. Thus, varied hiking and biking trails around the lakes invite you to extensive tours in nature. In summer, a swim in the cool water is refreshing, or you can go fishing, camping, pedal boating, surfing, sailing or diving.
